VATICAN CITY – The working document for this fall’s Synod of Bishops on the Bible called for a creative pastoral response to a growing hunger among Catholics for the word of God.

When we had alligator sausage for lunch, it was clear we were in a different part of the country. We are Blair Simms and Donald Singleton. As graduating seniors from Mount St. Joseph High School, we decided to “give back” as part of our senior project. We traveled to New Orleans with the goal of helping build houses for families still devastated by the damage Hurricane Katrina left two years ago. We really did not know that the two-week experience would be life-changing. Down in New Orleans we learned not to take anything for granted.

However, from the evening of May 12 to the morning of May 21, I was a patient at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. A new blood clot had apparently formed in my right leg, and parts of the blood clot had broken off and moved to my lungs! Clots in the lungs are known as pulmonary embolisms, and they can be fatal.

Rodi, a native of New Orleans who as bishop of Biloxi, Miss., was lauded for his leadership following Hurricane Katrina, was installed as the second archbishop of Mobile during a pageantry-filled liturgy June 6 at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, Communion and Liberation, Opus Dei and Focolare are several of the many worldwide movements within the Church that continue to attract and enrich the spiritual lives of millions of Catholic faithful.
