It began in 1634 with Maryland’s establishment as a haven for English Catholics and continued through the founding of the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1789, the first Catholic diocese in the United States. Pioneers like Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, who in 1810 opened a school for girls in Baltimore, and Mother Mary Lange, who in 1829 founded the first Catholic school for girls of color, laid the foundation for an enduring educational legacy.
