The Office of Black Catholic Ministries

Sharing the Gospel and promoting evangelization in the Black American community.

What we do

The Office of Black Catholic Ministries fosters the rich diversity of the Black Catholic Community within the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Its mission is to evangelize, enhance and celebrate the contributions of persons of African descent and the gifts they have to offer the Church and society. The office seeks to be a representative body composed of laity, religious and clergy dedicated to fostering the spiritual, educational, economic and cultural lives of persons of African descent in the archdiocese, reaching out to Catholics and non-Catholics, those who are active in the church as well as the un-churched. The Office of Black Catholic Ministries cooperates with the bishops, parish and archdiocesan leadership bodies, offices and agencies to carry out its evangelizing mission.

In 1889 Daniel Rudd and Delegates of the very first Black Catholic Congress raised concern regarding the need for Catholic education of Black youth. Delegates at the Congress made a motion on the floor to facilitate action to achieve this goal. Today, the sons and daughters of the National Black Catholic Congress movement active in the Archdiocese of Baltimore through the Office of Black Catholic Ministries, pick up this cause by establishing this Daniel Rudd Scholarship Fund.

FEAST DAY

St. Euphrosyne

By her life, Saint Euphrosyne reminds us that we must renounce "worldly passions and live soberly, uprightly, and devoutly" (Titus 2:12). That is, after rejecting the desires of this vain and sinful world, we ought to live abstemiously, with justice toward our fellow human beings, and with piety toward God.
