PORTLAND, Maine – Bishop Richard J. Malone of Portland criticized an Oct. 17 vote by the Portland School Committee to allow girls as young as 11 years of age at one of its middle schools to obtain birth control at the school’s health center.

Odds are that the 1,800 or so people who jammed the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore early in October will long remember the occasion, and the installation that day of Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien as the 15th Archbishop of Baltimore. That’s true, I know, any time a bishop is welcomed to a new home. The ceremony is rich with tradition, and in the midst of solemn celebration there’s often a festive air as well.

While costumed Halloween revelers will parade around Maryland Oct. 31 collecting candy door to door, children dressed as saints will help worshippers of the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, Emmitsburg, prepare for the feast of All Saints on Nov. 1.

Not only is The John Carroll School’s girls cross country team 9-0 in the IAAM A Conference, 10 of its 30-person roster traveled to Florida Oct. 4-7 to successfully compete in the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic, Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

When an elderly parishioner of St. Joseph in Sykesville needed to have a pane of glass and window frame replaced in her home, the company she called for help pressured her to buy all-new windows to the tune of several thousand dollars. Rather than purchase windows she didn’t need, the woman looked for help through the newly launched Hammer Ministry at her parish.
