Mount 2008 proves rousing success

It’s not often seminarians are treated like rock stars, with the crowd drumming their feet on the bleachers and applauding. But at Mount 2008 in Emmitsburg on Feb. 10, that was the appreciative response from more than 1,600 high school students and chaperones when the seminarians were acknowledged at the closing Mass of the weekend retreat.

Lent is a time for sacrifice, ‘giving up’ and change

For many years, James Ulmer has given something up for Lent. Whether it was candy, soda, alcohol or chocolate, the 56-year-old parishioner of St. Katharine Drexel in Frederick always made it through the traditional 40-day penitential season without reneging on his sacrificial pledges – although he admitted that going without chocolate “almost killed” him.

Sister Mary Catherine Moan, D.C.

A funeral Mass was offered Feb. 7 for Sister Mary Catherine Moan, D.C., at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg. Her brother, Father Francis X. Moan, S.J., was the main celebrant. Sister Mary Catherine died Feb. 4. She was 93 and had been a nun for 73 years.
