The Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province lost money after entrusting part of their endowment to Bernard Madoff, according to a Feb. 13 letter published on the Redemptorists’ Web site by Redemptorist Father Patrick Woods, provincial superior.

Sometimes I feel unable to recount history in the proper way or with the amount of supplication or pride I feel is required. But as a layperson in a church where vocations are declining, I believe this particular history is critical and useful for African-Americans and Catholic laity. It’s the story of Lincoln and Julia Vallé.

As previously reported, I met with the priests and school administrators of the Archdiocese this past week to discuss the challenges facing our schools and to seek their input as we begin the process of developing a long-term strategic plan for Catholic education in our Archdiocese. Their input was invaluable, and I will be sharing some of their suggestions in a future column. What follows are my remarks to the priests, which are very similar to those which I gave to our school presidents and principals two days later. The Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee soundly rejected a bill Feb. 12 that would have significantly extended the time period when child sexual abuse victims can file civil lawsuits in Maryland.
