BETHLEHEM, West Bank – Pope Benedict XVI knelt in prayer at the spot where tradition holds Jesus was born, then went to a Catholic children’s hospital, where he held an infant boy named Elias in his arms.

On April 26, 52 Girl Scouts from high schools in the Baltimore area received the Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting. Catholic schools were well represented in that number.

Early this year a Baltimore woman asked me for an appointment to plead a very urgent cause. Years ago, after the birth of her first child, she consulted doctor after doctor, all of whom told her that her medical condition necessitated her sterilization. A strong, knowledgeable Catholic, she refused their counsel and finally found a physician who knew and appreciated Catholic moral teaching. She is now the mother of seven and in excellent health. Why, she asked, is it so difficult to be supported in her beliefs by medical professionals, some of whom were Catholic?

O’Brien – congratulations on your clear, concise statement regarding the confusion set upon all of us by the University of Notre Dame and by our neighbor, Georgetown University, which sheepishly pretended not to be Catholic by removing the crucifix, etc. at the request of the White House.

Many students at the three Catholic colleges in the Archdiocese of Baltimore are approaching the end of their education journeys.

Gov. Martin J. O’Malley signed a bill May 7 that imposes significant restrictions on the death penalty in Maryland. The new law allows capital punishment only in murder cases where there is biological evidence, videotaped evidence or a videotaped confession.
