A French émigré priest, Father John DuBois, was sent by the first U.S. bishop, John Carroll, to bring liturgy and Catholic education to the “wilderness” of Maryland known today as Frederick and Emmitsburg. The priest planted a cross on “Mary’s Mountain” in 1808 to mark the site he envisioned for a future university and seminary.

Pope to visit New York, Washington in April

BALTIMORE – Pope Benedict XVI will visit Washington and New York April 15-20. Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, confirmed the dates of the papal trip and announced the pope’s itinerary in remarks Nov. 12 at the beginning of the annual fall meeting of the U.S. bishops in Baltimore.
