WASHINGTON – Monsignor Brian Donahue, vicar general of the Diocese of Fargo, N.D., and pastor of two parishes in the diocese, wants to do a second tour of duty as a military chaplain in Iraq.

It’s not often seminarians are treated like rock stars, with the crowd drumming their feet on the bleachers and applauding. But at Mount 2008 in Emmitsburg on Feb. 10, that was the appreciative response from more than 1,600 high school students and chaperones when the seminarians were acknowledged at the closing Mass of the weekend retreat.

When parishioners in the Archdiocese of Baltimore drop donations in the basket for the second collection Feb. 16 and 17, their dollars will help Catholic Relief Services address humanitarian emergency needs – big and small, domestic and abroad.

“Building for peace in a violent world” is the theme of the 29th annual Social Ministry Convocation March 1 at The Seton Keough High School, 1201 Caton Ave., in Baltimore. Registration for the event, which will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m., is $10. Lunch is provided for those who pre-register.

Ann Veilleux isn’t worried about her size 16 clothing going out of style. That’s because soon, the 50-year-old nurse will be buying smaller sizes. As recently as July, Mrs. Veilleux was a size 28 and her 5-foot-1-inch frame carried a body mass index of 47. A BMI of 40 is one of the criteria for being morbidly obese.

The annual Catholic Men’s Conference, sponsored by Catholic Men’s Fellowship of Maryland, will be held Feb. 23 at Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore. This year’s theme is “Father, Faith and Family.”

VATICAN CITY – Members of the Jesuit General Congregation are continuing to discuss what it means to be a Jesuit today with concrete directions for their ministries and for living their vow of obedience.

Sister Mary Ferdinand Tunis, R.S.M., celebrated 70 years as a nun and 88 years as a parishioner of St. Cecilia, Baltimore, on Dec. 23. “I can’t do too much with the parish but be their senior member,” she said with a chuckle.
