In response to the opinions of Tom Sheahen and Louie Verrecchio (CR, Dec. 6), contrary to popular “conservative” media, climate change has been definitively connected with human burning of fossil fuels. This has been substantiated by reputable scientists from around the world, not only from those of the IPCC. Most of the skepticism has been generated by non-peered studies funded by the oil industry, and therefore clearly non-objective.

As I was reading the response from Suzanne Molino Singleton in “Practice makes perfect,” (CR, Dec. 13) who stated that “… no one –and no team – is perfect …” my initial thoughts were, “She is a Godly person. I would want her to be my friend. I would want her children to be my children’s friends.”

LONDON – The head of a London Catholic hospital popular with celebrities quit his post following the adoption of a new code of ethics banning doctors from making abortion referrals and from handing out contraceptives and the morning-after pill.

WASHINGTON – Bishop John M. Smith of Trenton, N.J., said Dec. 14 he was pleased New Jersey legislators voted to abolish the death penalty, but said he would not have a “triumphalist attitude about it” because capital punishment is such a sensitive issue.

VATICAN CITY – Consecrating a new parish church, blessing figurines of the baby Jesus and reciting the Angelus with visitors in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Benedict XVI said the joy of the season comes from knowing Jesus is present among people and can work through them.

WASHINGTON – A U.S. bishops’ pro-life official gave high marks to a bill introduced in the U.S. Senate in December that would provide resources and support to pregnant women. “The bill will empower pregnant women to make healthy choices for themselves and their children, born and unborn,” said Deirdre McQuade, director of planning and information in the U.S. bishops’ Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities.

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School, Essex, Cougars accepted an invitation to the 38th Annual Mercer Invitational Tournament at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., Dec. 14-16 and placed third in a field of eight teams to improve their overall record to 8-1.
