A funeral Mass for Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Mary Mark Carnes, a former principal of St. Rita School in Dundalk, was offered June 30 at St. Rita. Sister Mary Mark died June 26; she was 82.

WASHINGTON – A legal expert from Jesuit-run Fordham University School of Law in New York was relieved the Supreme Court did not overturn the 2006 reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act, but he also believes the historic 1965 law was only given a stay.

I do not agree with the headline of Stephen Kent’s column, “Murder in a church on Pentecost sacrilegious” (CR, June 11). From a Catholic Web site, I learned that a murder in a sacred place is sacrilege. How can a place that permitted an abortionist to hold the office of “deacon” be sacred? If a church is a hospital for sinners I can understand his membership as a patient but not as one of the physicians. To grant him an office is to lie to the Holy Spirit, because he was not a servant of God. Check out Acts 5 for the consequences of lying to the Holy Spirit. Rather than Stephen Kent’s insinuation that Randall Terry speaks for those who do not share Kent’s political views, he should have asked his readers to pray for Dr. Tiller’s soul because the final request in the Lord’s prayer, “deliver us from evil,” can be answered with a “no.”

VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI will welcome U.S. President Barack Obama to the Vatican July 10 for an audience scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

WASHINGTON – The board of directors of Public Broadcasting Service voted June 16 to stop its member stations from airing new religious programming, though existing programs on PBS affiliate stations will continue to be broadcast.

The people of the Grotto of Lourdes and the town of Emmitsburg will surely miss Father John Lombardi, who has been our chaplain. He is a young and vibrant servant of the Lord, kind and gentle to all whom he encountered, especially the young. To the towns of Hancock and Little Orleans, where he will be the administrator of St. Peter and St. Patrick, respectively, please welcome Father Jack with open arms.
