MEXICO CITY – Members of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests released documents they say prove that top Catholic officials in Mexico and the United States sought to help a Mexican priest accused of sexual abuse evade the law.

You want the intimate atmosphere of a family bridal shower, but unfortunately it’s a big family. You have to find room for the bride’s great aunts, and cousin Sue has just told you she’s a vegan. For some families, the solution is to find a venue that offers an intimate home-like atmosphere, but one with professional kitchens and caterers, not to mention enough tables and chairs.

Russell Shaw (“Catholic President not necessarily good news for the Church,” CR/Aug. 30) seems to assume that Catholics have an obligation to apply the dogmas of the church to civil government of the United States. There can be no such obligation. The words of the Article VI of the Constitution govern the matter:

In failing to consider my Aug. 30 letter to the editor for publication (i.e. Justice 101), I might assume that The Catholic Review is not interested in historical correctness on the church’s “common teaching” about slavery prior to Vatican II.

Father Gene Nickol, pastor of Our Lady of the Fields, Millersville, will join Severna Park-area walkers during the Oct. 21 CROP walk at 1 p.m. on a six-mile trek on the Baltimore & Annapolis trail. About 20 walkers from the parish will walk; others will sponsor Father Nickol, who usually raises about $3,000.

A funeral Mass was offered for Sister Eva Boudreau, S.U.S.C., Aug. 29 in Fall River, Mass. Sister Eva died Aug. 27. She was 85.
