Had we gathered for the Chrism Mass during Holy Week, we would have heard Jesus announce to the people of Nazareth the mission which God the Father had entrusted to him.

Like Dr. King and like St. Peter Claver we must be resolute in rooting out racism and we must never mistake God’s mercy and a spirit of forgiveness as a cover or as an excuse for the prolongation of racism.

May your consecrated, priestly heart always be moved with pastoral love for the many people you will encounter in the course of your ministry.

We are called, each of us, to be the Lord’s co-workers in helping those on the margins to return to the heart and center of the Church, namely, the Eucharist, even in these very challenging times.

I cannot prophesy what challenges lay in the future for you or for the Church. But this we know: persecution and martyrdom will always be part of the Church’s life.

As we absorb God’s Word and receive Christ into our hearts, we are rescued from the darkness of sin all around us.
