Feeding the masses: Aussies plan giant barbecue for World Youth Day

SYDNEY, Australia – Talk about a barbecue for the ages. What’s being considered Australia’s largest-ever barbecue is being planned for July 16 when World Youth Day 2008 links with Rotary Australia to serve lunch to more than 120,000 pilgrims at 200 locations around Greater Sydney.

Four College of Notre Dame of Maryland graduates have been named “Teacher of the Year” in their respective Maryland counties: Melissa McFayden, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Ridgely Elementary School in Caroline County; John Billingslea, an AP psychology teacher at Franklin High School in Reisterstown; Bonnie Beavan, math teacher at Spring Ridge Middle School in Lexington Park; and Ronald Wooden, a fifth-grade teacher at George D. Lisby Elementary School in Aberdeen. Mr. Wooden participated in this year’s commencement ceremony May 24.

People gathered May 29 at War Memorial Plaza in Baltimore to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the “holodomor,” or Ukrainian genocide of 1932-33. Father Vasyl Sivinskyi, pastor of St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church in Baltimore, and Father Vasyl Kryshtompol, a Ukrainian Orthodox priest in Baltimore, lead a prayer service. A torch from Ukraine was used during the prayer service.
