VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI asked the Jesuits to continue to be pioneers in dialogue, theological research and work for justice, but insisted that they also must make clear their faith and their acceptance of the teachings of the Catholic Church.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Following the practice of some other dioceses, the Diocese of Little Rock is discouraging its parishes and schools from supporting fundraising activities for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“Is Christ here or not?” Jarred by the sudden and insistent voice as I exited the Church, I looked up, turned and found a woman standing beside me. She said, again, “Is Christ here or not?”

One of the genuinely hopeful developments in Catholic life in recent years has been the spread of eucharistic adoration. Parishes across the country have begun to offer opportunities for people to meditate and pray before the Blessed Sacrament. In some places, eucharistic adoration is a 24/7 program while elsewhere it takes place several days a week. It’s a great idea.

The Baltimore Sun published an article written by Jay Hancock entitled “Legalizing same-sex marriage is sensible” on the front page of the Feb. 20 business section. The article can be read online at https://www.baltimoresun.com/business/bal-bz.hancock20feb20,0,7741294.column. This article confuses a number of issues to come up with a faulty conclusion. It is imperative that we voice our disagreement with articles that advocate positions that are both erroneous and potentially damaging to our society’s moral foundation.

Why are our children so angry that they are killing themselves and others? Another school shooting in Illinois happened, this immediately after our community struggles to understand why a 16-year-old has been charged in connection with the murders of his parents and two younger brothers. We all remember the senseless killings on the campus of Virginia Tech. These are senseless murders by young people that we can’t comprehend, or when we try, we utter blanket statements such as, “They must be mentally ill.”

ROME – The disappearance of Christian communities from the Middle East threatens hope for finding a way to preserve traditional Arab values while also recognizing individual human rights, said two of the region’s Catholic bishops.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Continuing a discussion begun at the Second Vatican Council, about 40 U.S. bishops gathered at the convent of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in Mishawaka for a Feb. 11-13 seminar exploring the relationship between doctrine and Scripture in Catholic teaching, especially in homilies.

ANNAPOLIS – Although he said he understands concerns raised by the Catholic Church that House Bill 858 could devastate parishes, schools and church outreach ministries, one of the cosponsors of a state bill lifting the statute of limitations on child sex abuse civil cases still favors it because he is a “believer in victims’ rights,” he said.
