When overcome with fear, do we pray to a merciful God or see God’s wrath punishing us?

For the first time in its history, the Supreme Court announced April 13 it will conduct 10 oral arguments by teleconference in May. Among the arguments it will hear are cases involving the Little Sisters of the Poor and California Catholic schools.

Appearing on the CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes,” Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York said faith is key, even as people are in isolation from others as a result of the stay-at-home orders imposed to slow a worsening of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore launched a page on its website April 13 for people throughout the archdiocese to memorialize loved ones who have died of the coronavirus and to offer the prayers and support of the entire Catholic community.

“Our hold on this life is tenuous,” the archbishop said. “We are not all-powerful, but there is one who is – our risen Lord. In our need, let us turn to him this Easter day.”

Let us indeed pray in Jesus’ name for a swift end to this terrible pandemic. But let us also pray that, as this scourge is lifted from us, the contagion of hope, hope in Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life, will spread, from person to person, from family to family, from parish to parish, looking towards that day when we will be together again to celebrate the Easter Sacraments in joy and newness of life.
