Sister Mary Peter Kerner, O.S.F., dies at 79

A funeral Mass for Sister Mary Peter Kerner of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia will be offered Nov. 4 at noon at Our Lady of Angels Convent Chapel in Aston, Pa. Sister Mary Peter died Oct. 31. She was 79.

Born in Philadelphia, Sister Mary Peter entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1955 and professed her first vows in 1957. With a master’s degree in social work from The Catholic University of America in Washington, she ministered primarily in education and social services.
In Baltimore, she served at St. Peter Claver with the Nehemiah Project, a coordinated effort among religious leaders of various faiths to build 300 homes in impoverished areas of West Baltimore, from 1992 to 1993.
She also ministered for 46 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and 10 years in the Diocese of Wilmington. From 1977 to 1976, she taught at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Bethesda.
