VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI expressed his concern over the recent violence aimed at Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino of Caracas, Venezuela.

WASHINGTON – The clergy sex abuse scandal continued to have a major financial impact on U.S. Catholic dioceses in 2007 as multimillion-dollar settlements were reached with abuse victims and dioceses funded their share by selling church property, reducing staff and, in at least one case, soliciting contributions from priests and lay Catholics.

It was just an empty field between the school and the church. Today, it’s the heart of the Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke Athletic Association, which in just three years has filled that field with flag football and soccer teams and built a concession stand.

Father John A. Williamson has been appointed by Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien to serve as pastor of Church of the Ascension, Halethorpe, effective Jan. 15. The 35-year-old first-time pastor said he is looking forward to his assignment and feels his work at the Catholic Community of South Baltimore, where he has served for 18 months, has prepared him well. The Catholic Community of South Baltimore includes Holy Cross, Our Lady of Good Counsel and St. Mary, Star of the Sea.

Being present pastorally for his parishioners is one of the top priorities for the newly appointed pastor of St. Andrew by the Bay in Annapolis. “Being able to minister to people and interact with them is what I love most about the priesthood,” said Father Martin Burnham, a 41-year-old Baltimore native whose appointment by Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien takes effect immediately.
