More than 1,300 Catholic school teachers and administrators assembled Aug. 29 at the Church of the Nativity with Archdiocese of Baltimore leaders to open the new academic year with a call to leadership.

At the Pontifical North American College, new student orientation is not just a weekend or even just a week — it includes almost a month of intensive Italian studies, punctuated with occasional gelato sampling and one big shoutout from Pope Francis.

Father Manuel R. Roman, a native of the U.S. Virgin Islands who was a few weeks shy of his 94th birthday when he died, was pastor of Church of the Ascension in Halethorpe from 1986 to his retirement in June 2005.
