When we embrace the poor and lowly, encountering them not as a problem to be solved but as persons made in the image of God, then it is that the Law of Love is fulfilled in us.

Behind the text of Matthew’s Gospel is the bedrock truth of our faith, that this obscure Rabbi from Galilee was, and is, the Incarnate Son of God: He is the Word made flesh, the very embodiment of the Torah, not as it is written on tablets of stone, but as it is inscribed on the mind of God.

It is the Lord who called me and chose me – called me to be his follower and called me to be his adopted son – and then called me to be a priest. “It is not you who chose me, but I who chose you.”

He made you what you are and reminds you who you are: YOU are the salt of the earth. YOU are the light of world. Filled with the love that we receive from this altar:  Go be who you are.

Your pastor is a disciple before he is a shepherd. He is to model what it means to live the Beatitudes. And his chief responsibility is to place at your disposal all the means necessary for you to grow in discipleship.
