Sister Diane Ris, S.P., dies

A funeral Mass for Congregation of the Sisters of Providence Diane Ris was offered Feb. 26 in Indiana. Sister Diane died Feb. 20. She was 80 and had been a sister for more than six decades.

She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1951 and professed final vows in 1959.

Sister Diane taught at the former St. Clement School in Lansdowne from 1959 to 1962. She served for 21 years as a teacher at schools in Indiana and Illinois and she ministered for 19 years at Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky.

Sister Diane also served as provincial of St. Gabriel Province in Indiana and she served as the 16th general superior from 1996 to 2001.

She then worked to finish a book by Sister Joseph Eleanor Ryan on the life of St. Mother Theodore Guerin, which she completed in 2011. During that time, she also volunteered as a healing minister in health care. 

Sister Diane earned a bachelor’s from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.; a master’s from Indiana University; and a Ph.D. from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Her degrees were in education.
