Shakespeare theory endures over decades

Permit me to comment on “Claiming Shakespeare: Author argues Bard of Avon was a Catholic” (CR, July 24).)

When I was in the high school seminary (1941-1945), operated by the Capuchin Fathers, one of our teachers, Father H. Greenwald, O.F.M. Cap., had earned his Ph.D. from Catholic University of America by writing his dissertation on that very subject, making use of internal and external evidence to prove his point. Now comes along another enterprising man, Joseph Pearce, author of the “Quest for Shakespeare: the Bard of Avon and the Church of Rome”, who resurrects Greenwald’s argument of more than a half century ago. My, what a small world we live in.
