A bridge stands near PNC Park in Pittsburgh. (CR/George P. Matysek Jr.) I’m in Pittsburgh this week for the annual Catholic Media Convention. Stay tuned for some musings!
In this week’s Catholic Review, you will read about a new parish forming in Western Maryland. Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien has approved a proposal to unite the five Cumberland-area parishes into a single faith community with one pastoral staff to be known as “Our Lady of the Mountains.” The affected parishes are Ss. Peter and […]
Re the What’s Rite column (CR, June 9) on the new Roman Missal, I have problems understanding the various translations and the reason for them when it changes things that we have become used to. One that stands out to me is the change to the 23rd Psalm where the words “and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” has been changed to “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come”. Forever seems to be a much better connotation.
Some parishes may start singing the musical settings from the new Roman Missal a few months sooner than planned. New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond, chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship, announced yesterday during the bishops’ spring meeting in Washington State that bishops may grant permission for parishes to introduce […]

Matysek Jr.) Otis Rolley is trying to shake things up in his bid to succeed Stephanie Rawlings-Blake as the next mayor of Baltimore. During a June 13 press conference outside public school headquarters on North Avenue, Rolley said he wanted to close […]

The story of Our Lady of the Chesapeake, Lake Shore, can’t be told without Father Walter J. Paulits. The founding pastor of the Anne Arundel County parish, however, would not have sought such credit.
The Catholic Review In 1970, a newly-minted Army chaplain, with airborne wings fresh out of “jump school,” I looked forward to my first leave on the Fourth of July weekend. I was to join a friend at the Boston Commons for the chance to hear the Boston Pops, under the direction of famed conductor Arthur […]
The column “Vengeance is not justice for bin Laden,” by Jesuit Father William J. Byron (CR, June 2) should have defined justice and vengeance to distinguish the difference.
