VATICAN CITY – Kurt Waldheim, former U.N. secretary-general and president of Austria, died June 14 at the age of 88. The longtime diplomat, who died of heart failure in his home in Vienna, Austria, had been a controversial figure for his World War II role as an officer in the German army, and Vatican interaction with him in the late 1980s and early 1990s sparked criticism from Jewish groups.

The Cardinal’s Lenten Appeal exceeded its $6 million goal for 2007, marking the first time the Archdiocese of Baltimore has met and surpassed its annual fundraising benchmark in its 16-year history.

A funeral Mass was offered June 2 at Immaculate Conception Church, Elkton, for Sister Cecilia Mary Grimes, O.S.F. Sister Cecilia Mary died May 30. She was 76 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 54 years.
