Catholic School in Ellicott City Awarded $50,000 Grant to Evaluate Use of Wind Turbines

Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Ellicott City, a Catholic elementary and middle school in Howard County, in partnership with the Albright Foundation, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Federal Hill Preparatory School, has been awarded a $50,000 grant from Constellation Energy to study the school’s use of wind as an energy source.

The grant will enable students at OLPH and nearby Federal Hill Preparatory School to participate in an applied science project to evaluate whether a wind turbine at the two schools can produce enough energy to meet their power needs.

The grant program, “E2: Energy to Educate”, targets projects that advance energy innovation and build on student knowledge and application of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Collectively, the program awarded a total of $350,000 to 10 projects in communities where Constellation Energy does business.

“We are excited to be recipients of the grant,” commented Mrs. Nancy Malloy, Principal of OLPH. “The funding will enable us to enrich our students’ experience with scientific research and collaboration and demonstrate how results can be applied to engineering solutions that address practical problems. Most exciting is the additional exposure our students have to STEM related activities and the impact that this exposure can have on them as they advance in their education.”

Our Lady of Perpetual Help School serves students in grades K through eight and has a current enrollment of 215 students. A preschool program will be launched in 2011. Prospective Families are invited to attend an Open House on December 1, 2010 at 9:00 am to learn more about the school and the registration process for the 2011 school year .
