My Dear Friends in Christ,

It is a joy to greet you as we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord. I hope that you and all your loved ones will rejoice as together we celebrate the victory of Christ over sin and death. The Resurrection is the central fact, the foundational mystery, of the Christian life. It is the heart of Scripture, the hinge of all the Church believes and teaches, the mystery we celebrate in the Mass and Sacraments, the impetus of our private prayer, the new life we strive to live in our relationships with others and in our service to those in need.

This year our Easter joy is redoubled by the fact that some 2,000 people, many of them young adults, have entered the Church here in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. This is more than double the number who entered last year. This is evidence that the Spirit of the Risen Lord is in our midst, working in the hearts of many people who are searching for an enduring truth and love on which to stake their lives. Let us welcome these new members of our Church with love!

Let us also pray for peace. Christ, in conquering sin and death, is the Prince of Peace. Let us pray to the Risen Lord that the war in the Middle East and Ukraine will come to a quick conclusion, and let us commend to the Lord those who have been harmed in this war: those who have lost their lives, especially children; families who have lost their homes and livelihoods; servicemembers who have lost their lives or who have been injured. May Christ, whose truth and love conquers sin and death, help us find the path to peace in all the places beset by violence, persecution, and poverty.

Let us also ask the Risen Lord to heal the wounds of sin and division in our land, especially as we prepare to celebrate  the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. May the Spirit of the Risen Lord move us to learn again how to set aside partisanship and the pursuit of power and instead work to enhance human dignity and the common good, seeking to listen to one another, to repair and strengthen civic friendships, and the virtues that make for a strong and healthy society.

Again, I wish all of you a happy and joyous season of Easter.

May God bless us and keep us always in his love!
