Archbishop William E. Lori on violence and unrest in Minneapolis

In recent days and weeks, events in Minneapolis have drawn national attention and prompted concern about the loss of life and the tensions that have followed within the community and among authorities.

As Archbishop Bernard Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis rightly reminded us in his recent statement, “The chaos benefits no one.” His call for peace, prayer, and a renewed commitment to human dignity offers a needed moral compass in this difficult moment.

This is a moment for us, as believers and citizens, to pause – to pray, to reflect, and to work for a better day. We pray for the two individuals who lost their lives, as well as for their families and loved ones. May public officials and law enforcement carry out their duties with restraint and with respect for human dignity and the common good; let us keep them in our prayers.

While the Church understands that the government has the responsibility to enforce laws and to secure the borders, let us also reflect on the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform that ensures the safety of all, respects those who come or have come to the United States seeking a better life for themselves and their families, keeps families together, and offers a path to citizenship. Let us work for a better day by urging our elected officials to support meaningful immigration reform rooted in justice, compassion, and the inherent dignity of every human person.
