Sister M. Gertrude Hopkins, I.H.M., dies

A funeral Mass for Sister, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary M. Gertrude Hopkins was offered Nov. 7 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. Sister Gertrude died Nov. 3. She was 95.
A native of Pittston, Pa., Sister Gertrude entered the religious order in 1937, and served as a teacher at the former St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore from 1940 to 1954.
From 1954 to 2006, Sister Gertrude served as a teacher, principal and library assistant at schools in New York, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. From 2006 until her death, she was a prayer minister at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.
She earned a bachelor’s in English/social sciences from Marywood University in Scranton; a master’s in classical studies from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa.; and a master’s in secondary administration from the University of Scranton.
