Sister Anthony Wargel, O.S.U., dies

A funeral Mass for Ursuline Sister Anthony Wargel was offered Jan. 30 at the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel in Louisville, Ky. Sister Anthony, 100, died Jan. 24 at Mercy Sacred Heart in Louisville. Born in Evansville, Ind. she entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1932. She taught school for 60 of her 83 years as a member of the congregation, including at Sts. Peter and Paul School in Cumberland, from 1965 to 1968.

Sister Anthony also taught in Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and West Virginia, and remained active as a tutor until age 91. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Ursuline College in Louisville, a master’s degree in education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and certification in remedial reading from Marquette University in Milwaukee.
