Longtime John Carroll volunteer dies

St. Ignatius, Hickory, parishioner George Barenz, a longtime volunteer at The John Carroll School, died Sept. 28.

Mr. Barenz and his wife Jean, who died May 16, 2005, were a legacy at the school, serving in the cafeteria, driving the school bus, volunteering in the library, ringing their cowbell at sporting events and generally spreading good cheer around the campus.

Visitation will take place at the McComas Funeral Home, 50 W. Broadway, Bel Air, on Oct. 1 from 7-9 p.m. and Oct. 2 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

The final viewing will be held Oct. 3 at St. Ignatius in Hickory from 9-10:50 a.m. A funeral Mass will be held in the St. Ignatius Historic Church at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Bel Air Memorial Gardens.
