Father Buettner dies at 87

Father George J. Buettner, former associate pastor, social worker and tribunal advocate, died Sept. 4. He was 87.

Father Buettner graduated from Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Highlandtown and attended Loyola High School and what is now Loyola University in Maryland. After preparing for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, he was ordained June 7, 1952 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore.

Father Buettner served as a social worker with Catholic Charities. He was an associate pastor of St. Joseph in Fullerton and St. Dominic in Baltimore. He was appointed advocate of the Tribunal in 1962 and retired in 1992.

According to his wishes, Father Buettner will be cremated and a memorial Mass will be offered at a later date.
