Brother Andrew DiNoto, F.S.C.

A funeral Mass for Brother Andrew DiNoto, F.S.C., was offered April 9 at St. Ursula, Parkville. Brother Andrew died April 5. He would have been 98 years old April 25.

A New Jersey native, Brother Andrew entered the Brothers’ Novitiate in January 1940. He pronounced perpetual vows there August 1946.

Brother Andrew taught social studies at Calvert Hall College High School, Towson, from 1947-2005. From 1941-1947, he studied and taught at the Philadelphia Catholic Protectory for Boys in Pennsylvania.

“Calvert Hall was his life,” said Brother Benedict Oliver, F.S.C.

He said Brother DiNoto spent most of his time at the school as its athletic director and later served as manager of the school cafeteria.

“I’ve seen alumni cheer up when they told stories about times they didn’t have lunch money and Brother Andrew slipped them a hot dog or hamburger and a coke. The present students don’t know him, but the alumni absolutely revered him. He was a fixture in the school.”

Brother Andrew suffered a stroke in 1977.

“Thereafter, all he could say was ‘very good,’” said his fellow brother. He never regained his speech and spent the past three years in a nursing home.

Brothers and students referred to him as “Little Andy” because of his 5-foot 4-inch height.
