Apple Dumpling Day

Students and volunteers made more than 400 apple dumplings for Visitation Academy’s “Apple Dumpling Day” on Sept. 26.

The tradition dates back to 1846 when the Sisters of the Visitation arrived in Frederick to operate the academy. They received a welcome dinner from the people of the town. The meal was shared with students at the school and included apple dumplings for dessert. From that day on, the Sisters of the Visitation celebrated Apple Dumpling Day each September by preparing and serving Apple Dumplings to the community in thanksgiving for the welcome and support they received from the people of Frederick.

Although the tradition was lost over the years, the students of the Visitation Academy revived it in 2005.
