Group raising funds in an effort to save Mount St. Mary’s men’s soccer

In November, Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg announced it will discontinue three of its Division I athletics teams in 2013 to reduce its athletics budget.

Men’s soccer and men’s and women’s golf will be cut after the 2012-13 academic year.

The Mount St. Mary’s University Goal Club is attempting to raise $250,000 by Dec. 31 to help save the men’s soccer program.

“My husband and I have been thrilled with the school, the soccer program and its faith formation of our son,” Ann Gill, mother of sophomore Daniel Gill, said in a statement. “Losing the opportunity to form young men through Catholic education and athletics would be a travesty for the future leadership of the church.”

To donate, visit the Mount’s website, click on the tabs “Give to the Mount” and “Give Now.” Or, mail donations to Robert Deegan, 8911 Harness Way, Bowie, MD 20715.

If the goal is not met, donations will be returned.
