Catholic Review receives national awards for journalism

By Catholic Review Staff

The Catholic Review was honored by the Associated Church Press May 2 in its annual “Best of the Christian Press Awards” contest in Chicago.

Annually, the ACP awards three levels of awards in various categories of publishing work: Award of Excellence (first place), Award of Merit (second place) and Honorable Mention (third place). The ACP is one of the oldest religious press organizations in the country.

Matt Palmer, formerly a staff writer for the Catholic Review and now social media coordinator for CR Media, won honorable mentions for Feature Article and Convention or Meeting Coverage: News Service/Newsletter/Website/Blog.

Palmer has won an award in the convention category during each of the last three years. This year his blog “The Welcome Matt” was honored in the category for coverage of World Youth Day.

His feature story “I was lost, but now am found” was about a local man hurt badly in a drug overdose, but was ultimately redeemed by his faith.

April Hornbeck, CR Media Art Director, won an honorable mention award for front page design for “Vested for Service,” which appeared on the cover of the May 19, 2011 newspaper and featured the ordination of 14 new deacons for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
