Students get creative with recycling, earn honors

Learning about recycling at Our Lady of Hope/ St. Luke School in Dundalk requires more than just sorting what can go into the blue bin.

For third-graders Sebastian Dowden and John Hollen, it included having their science projects, made from recycled items, recognized in a national online Eco-Product Design Contest at TerraCycle.com

John placed second runner-up with his project Flower Power, a small greenhouse made from recycled water bottles that he used to grow catnip for his cats.

Sebastian’s traveling game board made out of a pillowcase, shoestring and old bottle caps received an honorable mention in the contest, which called for contestants to “design creative upcycled products.”

“We were very pleasantly surprised,” said teacher Janet Myers, whose idea it was to enter the contest.
