Loyola Blakefield to host bone marrow drive

Loyola Blakefield in Towson will host a bone marrow testing drive Aug. 17 from 2-8 p.m. in search of a possible bone marrow transplant match for Joe Gorman, an incoming freshman who is battling leukemia.

The tests are free, but donations are being accepted to offset their cost. Organizers have set a fundraising goal $17,000 – the approximate cost of completing 500 tests.

In addition to helping Gorman, participants will help other cancer patients. Results of each bone marrow test will be entered into the National Bone Marrow Registry and matched with thousands of other cancer patients.

The test takes only a few minutes, involving a simple cheek swab. Healthy persons between the ages of 18-60 are eligible.
