Five Sailors set to play college lacrosse

After playing in their final league game of the season, five Mount de Sales Academy, Catonsville, senior lacrosse players were honored at the Sailors’ first senior signing, April 30 in The Regina Keenan Knott Alumnae Hall on the campus of Mount de Sales.

Family, friends, administrators and coaches gathered that evening to recognize the bright future of these players but also took a look back at the players’ accomplishments over the last four years.

Head coach Ritch Taylor, assistant coach Mike Tirocchi and athletic director Gene Williams each spoke about the players, the program and the pride of the Sailor tradition.

“These five athletes are so talented and they were always looking to better themselves,” said assistant coach Mike Tirocchi. “Mount de Sales puts out at least five Division I lacrosse players each year.”

Midfielder Meg Decker will attend the United States Naval Academy; midfielder Caitlin Hoffen will attend George Mason University; defender Cristina Johnson is headed to Regis University; leading goal scorer Alison Libertini will attend the University of Delaware; and goalie Megan Steffe is headed to Loyola College in Maryland, Baltimore.

The Sailors ended the year with a 4-8 league record in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland’s A Conference and was eliminated in the first round of the play-offs, May 4, by St. Mary’s, Annapolis, 12-9.

The IAAM championships will be held May 13 at Loyola College at noon.
