Clergy stances on life issues need clarification

I would like the church to respond to the excellent letters (Jan. 29, CR) from Kaitlin Moran and Mike Brady. I am just as confused as they are regrading the standing of the Catholic Church on the issues of abortion, embryonic stem cell research, gay marriages and the Freedon of Choice Act, and what we are supposed to teach our children..

The church is sending mixed messages, as some members of the clergy seem to be in agreement with these issues. How can the clergy support and go against their own doctrines?

The bishops should not have different policies for people in politics and their church members. Why doesn’t the church address these issues with the Catholic politicians who do not support the doctrine of the church? I thought that supporting abortion called for excommunication. I’m sure that many Catholics would like these issues clarified.
