Welcome, Bishop-elect Bruce Lewandowski

Pope Francis announced June 10 that Redemptorist Father Bruce Lewandowski, pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus-Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Parish in Highlandtown since 2015, has been named the newest auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The bishop-elect has served the last seven months as the archbishop’s delegate for Hispanic Ministry. He will be ordained a bishop Aug. 18 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland.

El Papa Francisco nombró al Padre Redentorista Bruce A. Lewandowski como un nuevo obispo auxiliar de Baltimore. El obispo electo ha servido desde 2015 como pastor de la parroquia Sacred Heart of Jesus- Sagrado Corazón de Jesús en Highlandtown, en el este de Baltimore. También ha servido los últimos siete meses como delegado del arzobispo para el ministerio hispano. Será ordenado obispo el 18 de agosto en la Catedral de María Nuestra Reina en la Patria.

We are joyfully anticipating the ordination of Bishop-elect Bruce Lewandowski on August 18 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen starting at 2 p.m. Given the many precautions we will have to observe to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance, this event will of course be very different from similar celebrations in the past.

The need for social distancing will significantly limit attendance at the ordination. While we are all eager to celebrate this day with Bishop-elect Bruce, and to personally convey our support and congratulations to him, we will need to find new and creative ways to ensure that all communities of our richly diverse archdiocese are represented at the event.

To accommodate as many groups as possible, we plan to hold a vespers ceremony the evening before the ordination for clergy, religious communities, deacons and seminarians, and will be contacting these communities in the near future with further details about the available spaces for each group.

For the ordination itself, we will extend invitations to a wide variety of archdiocesan communities, but will need to limit attendance to one or two individuals from each community. We hope in this way to ensure there is broad representation from throughout the Archdiocese, while at the same time maintaining an appropriate limit on the total number of people present at the Cathedral. The ordination will also be live-streamed so that anyone who wishes to may view the event online.

Estamos esperando con alegría la ordenación del Obispo electo Bruce Lewandowski el 18 de agosto en la Catedral de María Nuestra Reina. Dadas las muchas precauciones que tendremos que observar para garantizar la seguridad de todos los asistentes, este evento, por supuesto, será muy diferente de celebraciones similares en el pasado.

Como saben, la necesidad de distanciamiento social limitará significativamente la asistencia a la ordenación.
