Letter to Cardinal Varela, Archbishop of Madrid

His Eminence

Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela

Archbishop of Madrid

Arzobispado

Bailén 8, Madrid 28071

Spain

Your Eminence,

This morning all of us who heard the news from Madrid were shocked by the needless taking of innocent life in the terrorist attacks at the railroad stations.

I write to communicate our feelings of solidarity with you and the families of the victims. At the celebration of the Eucharist this morning in the Basilica of the Assumption, the first Catholic Cathedral of the United States, we remembered in the general intercessions and in all our prayer the victims of this terrible tragedy.

May the Lord of all mercies bring consolation and strength to survivors and grant the peace of His Eternal Kingdom to the victims.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Cardinal William H. Keeler

Archbishop of Baltimore
