Woodmont Academy receives $900,000 challenge grant

Thomas V. Cunningham of The Cunningham Family Foundation has issued a challenge to Howard County’s newest Catholic elementary school, Woodmont Academy. If the Cooksville school receives pledges of $1 million or greater by Dec. 31, The Cunningham Family Foundation will donate $900,000 to Woodmont’s capital campaign, “Building Faith…Forming Leaders.”

Woodmont has already received pledges totaling $600,000, which includes a $150,000 pledge from the Rachuba Family Foundation.

“This is a time in our life when it is a sacrifice to pledge this much money, but at the same time we feel it is very important to put the school on a strong financial footing,” said Mr. Cunningham, president and CEO of Alabanza Corporation, Baltimore.

Mr. Cunningham and his wife, Rosa, have six children; four of them attend Woodmont.

“We are thrilled by the generosity of our school community and are very optimistic about meeting this challenge.” said Scott F. Brown, the school’s executive director. “Based on the campaign feasibility study, we are on target to hit our $2.5 million goal ahead of schedule.”

All campaign funds will offset a portion of the development and construction costs incurred to develop Woodmont’s 67-acre campus, he said.

Woodmont Academy is affiliated with the Legionaries of Christ and follows the academic curriculum developed by that religious order.
