Francis and Clare<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-e071eac\" data-block-id=\"e071eac\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-e071eac-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-c9f20cc\" data-block-id=\"c9f20cc\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-c9f20cc{flex:1 1 66.7% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-c9f20cc-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks\">\n<p>Did you know that both St. Francis\u2019 parents and St. Clare\u2019s parents vigorously opposed their vocations?<br><br>St. Francis\u2019 parents thought he was foolish to give up the inheritance of his father\u2019s successful merchant business and profess vows of poverty and prayer. His father had become incensed to such a measure that Francis hid himself in a cave near the church of St. Damian for a whole month to avert his wrath. When he emerged from his hiding place and returned to town, he was followed by a mob that pelted him with mud and stones and called him a madman. Francis\u2019 father then dragged him home, beat him, bound him, and locked him in a dark closet.<br><br>While Francis\u2019 father was traveling, his mother freed him and he fled to St. Damian again. His father, upon his return, publicly disowned him before the bishop. Francis\u2019 response to this was to take off his clothes and hand them to his father saying, \u201cHitherto I have called you my father on earth; henceforth I desire to say only \u2018Our Father who art in Heaven.\u2019\u201d He also said, \u201cWhat is better: to obey my Father in heaven or my father here on earth?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-c118e89\" data-block-id=\"c118e89\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-c118e89{flex:1 1 33.3% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-c118e89-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.archbalt.org\/vocations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/parents-sts-francis-clare.jpg\" alt=\"Parents of Sts. His words inspired her heart and she sought him out secretly to ask if she might also live \u201cafter the manner of the holy Gospel\u201d. St. Francis recognized that this was a true desire and promised to assist Clare. On the night of Palm Sunday, she secretly left her father\u2019s house by St. Francis\u2019 advice, and along with her aunt and another woman went to a chapel to meet St. Francis and his companions. There, she laid aside her worldly life and vowed herself to the service of Christ. St. Francis placed her initially with the Benedictine nuns of San Paolo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clare\u2019s father had intended her for marriage. He was greatly angered, not only by her refusal to follow his plans, but also by her leaving his house in secret. Upon discovering where she was, he did all that he could to dissuade her from her vows, and then tried to drag her home by force. But Clare stood firm in her convictions, even grabbing the altar in the chapel so that she could not be dragged away. Convinced that he could not dissuade her, her father was finally obliged to leave her in peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As parents, you have hopes and dreams for your children. You want many things for them, but ultimately you want their happiness. For the parents of Sts. Francis and Clare, their own desires for their children\u2019s\u2019 futures blinded them to what Christ was calling their children to do. But St. Francis and St. Clare knew God was calling them, and were courageous enough to say \u201cyes\u201d, thereby finding true happiness. In the same way, God has given each of your children a vocation \u2013 a way that he has called them to give themselves to Him and to the world in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, there is a beautiful statue of St. Francis\u2019 parents in Assisi. They are famous because their son became a friar and founded the Franciscans, which is the largest family of religious men and women in the world. Parents, encourage your children to follow God\u2019s will for their lives.
