Sullivan, Calvert Hall complete sweeps

Zach Sullivan, a senior at Archbishop Spalding High School, and Calvert Hall College High School completed sweeps of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and Maryland/D.C. Private Schools cross country titles.

Showing no signs of a foot injury that curtailed his training in October, Sullivan repeated as the individual champion at the MIAA meet at Oregon Ridge Park Nov. 5 by a 16-second margin. Three days later, he took the private schools crown at Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood with a 30-second romp over the runner-up.

Coach Randy Fowler’s Calvert Hall squad edged Spalding at the MIAAs, then held off Georgetown Prep at the private schools meet.

Seniors Chris Swisko and Sean Caskey, juniors Nick Rowe and Ken Motsay, and sophomore Anthony Valletta provided the top five in both meets for the Cardinals. At the MIAAs, senior Nick Pasko and Sean Cooney provided depth that won the displacement points.

Elizabeth Tauber, a sophomore at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, added the private school title to her Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland crown, as she won her race by 9 seconds. Notre Dame Preparatory, Towson, finished third in the team chase, behind Georgetown Visitation Preparatory and National Cathedral School.

Goretti soccer rolls

The boys’ soccer team from St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown won the Maryland Independent Schools state championship with a 2-1 victory over The Heights School.

Goretti used a pair of second-half goals to subdue St. John’s Catholic Prep of Frederick in the semifinals, and then won its first state crown since 2003.

David Applebaum and Paul Chae were the only seniors on Coach Marty Wills’ team, which also included Alex Bolinger, John Connor, Wil Dorman, Michael Hawbaker, Nic Martin, Hugo Munoz, Ryan Paolini, Tyler Sterling, Aaron Wilkinson, Jeff Zielinski, Ben Denning, Thomas Blake, Mateo Pelja, Jacob Horejs, Austin Longnecker and Mike Brower.

Goretti finished with an 11-9-5 record.

Landmark season for Walsh football

The football team at Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland completed its independent schedule with a 9-1 record, tying a school record for wins set by the 1991 team. The program dates back to 1966, so it was a remarkable debut for first-year coach Mike Page.
