Sister Mary Beniti, C.S.C., dies

Sister of the Holy Cross Mary Beniti died Jan. 13 at Saint Mary’s Convent in Notre Dame, Ind., Jan. 13. She was 96. Born Bernardine Veronica Scanlon in Washington, D.C., she spent 61 years as an elementary school teacher, including two stints at St. Patrick School in Baltimore, 1965-66 and 1979-87.
The only time she left the East Coast was to teach for four years in McAllen, Texas. In her biography she wrote, “I have tried to make the children realize that God’s kingdom is now and we are going to continue in Heaven what we have begun now! Waiting until one dies is too late.”
