Sister M. St. Monica Costello, I.H.M., dies

A funeral Mass for Sister, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary M. St. Monica Costello was offered Nov. 11 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Center in Scranton, Pa. Sister St. Monica died Nov. 5. She was 75.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Sister St. Monica entered the religious order in 1956.

From 1959 to 2000, Sister St. Monica served as a teacher, principal and administrative director at schools in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and North Carolina.

She served as a teacher at St. Agnes School in Baltimore from 1975 to 1977.

Sister St. Monica was the director of her religious order’s Educational Enrichment Institute at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Center in Scranton from 2000 until her death.

Among those who survive Sister St. Monica, one of four siblings, is her brother, Redemptorist Father Andrew Costello of Annapolis.

She earned a bachelor’s in education and a master’s in religious education, both from Marywood University in Scranton, Pa.
