Sister Elizabeth McGlynn, S.S.N.D., dies

A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Elizabeth McGlynn was offered May 7 at the chapel at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn. Sister Elizabeth died May 3. She was 83.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Sister Elizabeth professed first vows in 1954 and final vows in 1960. She would have celebrated her 60th jubilee this summer.

Sister Elizabeth taught at the parish school of St. Joseph’s Passionist Monastery in Irvington from 1954 to 1958. She served at schools in Massachusetts from 1958 to 1961 and New York from 1961 to 1975. 

In 1975 she became retreat director for Better World Movement in Silver Spring. Sister Elizabeth served as director of religious education at a parish in New York from 1979 to 1983.  

She ministered in pastoral care with the Interprovincial Cherokee Project in Oklahoma from 1983 to 1986 and then served as director of religious education at a parish in New York from 1986 to 1992.

In 1992 Sister Elizabeth moved to Connecticut, where she served for the remainder of her life.

She ministered at two parishes in Connecticut from 1993 to 2002, first as director of religious education, then as director of parish outreach.

In 2002, she moved to Villa Notre Dame, a home for her religious order’s retired sisters, in Wilton, Conn.

She ministered in pastoral outreach at a parish while serving her religious community as a volunteer and driver. 

In 2010 Sister Elizabeth moved to Lourdes Health Care Center, adjacent to Villa Notre Dame.

Sister Elizabeth earned a bachelor’s in education from what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore and a master’s in education and reading from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
