Military archbishop to be installed

It’s a toss-up as to who can do pomp and circumstance best – the military or the Catholic church.

But the best of both will make for a moving celebration as Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio is installed as Archbishop of the U.S. Military Services on Jan. 25 at The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

The Basilica is located at 400 Michigan Ave. NE, on the campus of Catholic University.
A ceremonial procession of hundreds of cardinals, bishops, priests and deacons will begin at 1:30 p.m.; the Mass begins with the ceremonial “Rite of Canonical Possession” at 2 p.m. Visitors are asked to arrive at 1 p.m.

Archbishop Broglio, 56, served as the apostolic nuncio to the Dominican Republic and the apostolic delegate to Puerto Rico for over six years. Before being ordained a bishop, Archbishop Broglio served as the chief of cabinet for Cardinal Angelo Sodano, secretary of state for His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

The Archdiocese of the U.S. Military Services is geographically the church’s largest diocese, serving more than 1.4 million Catholics worldwide.
