Keeler honored by Frederick schools group

Cardinal William H. Keeler, retired archbishop of Baltimore, was given the 2008 John McElroy Award by the Friends of Catholic Education, Inc. Oct. 7. The award is given each year to a person who has advanced Catholic school education in Frederick County.

The Lenten Appeal, which the cardinal began, has helped raise more than $44 million to support Catholic schools. A new building for St. John Regional Catholic School, Frederick, also opened during his time as archbishop, and he served on the board of trustees of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary and University, Emmitsburg.
