John Carroll hires football coach

On Feb. 1, The John Carroll School, Bel Air, announced that it hired a new football coach, Keith Rawlings. The Patriots compete in the MIAA B Conference and finished their season 2-6 in league play and 2-8 overall.

Rawlings is a longtime resident of Harford County and owner of The Arena Club, a local health club whose mission statement is “serving fitness and fun.”

Larry Dukes, athletic director, said, “We are very happy with our selection. We feel that Keith not only brings a strong football background, but (is) someone who understands the community, the mission of the school, and possesses the values that we want instilled in our young men.”

Rawlings, a Division III college football player, has coached on a variety of levels from recreation leagues to high school teams. “I believe my experience both on and off the field will serve me well in motivating young people to achieve their best, not only as athletes, but as productive citizens of their schools and communities.”

Dukes said that the coaching search yielded several well-qualified candidates, and it appears that Coach Rawlings’ unique combination of on-field abilities and off-field contacts made a difference.

Day for women

Loyola College in Maryland, Baltimore, will host a celebration of women and their contributions to, and ongoing participation in, athletics on Feb. 10, when the Greyhounds’ women’s basketball team hosts Saint Peter’s College.

The Greyhounds’ recognition of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which is free and open to girls in kindergarten through the eighth grade, will feature a variety of events geared to young ladies that begin at 10 a.m., and includes admission to the noon basketball game. The festivities will culminate with an ice cream social following the game. Participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

“This is a great opportunity for girls in our community to come out and see a basketball game while they participate in a day that is geared to celebrating women of all ages,” said Joe Logan, Loyola head women’s basketball coach.
